Originally excavated in the 1740s by Sir Francis Dashwood, the caves were all dug out by hand – the individual pick marks can still be seen on the walls.
The caves were used for parties by the notorious Hell-Fire Club, hence the name today. Famous visitors included Benjamin Franklin, who was a friend of Sir Francis.
